A Physical Book or an E-Book?

Waes Hael (good health and fortune) To All!  This past weekend, I was asked why I have not published my latest work, Our Heilige Yule - A Reclamation Project, as an e-book.  It is a fair question.  

Our Heilige Yule was written and published to be a physical handbook.  As such, the reader can underline interesting points and also write personal notes in the margins.  It is a book that can be put on a shelf and used year after year.  This is the reason.

A Taste of Our Heilige Yule- A Reclamation Project

After the Protestant Reformation was over, the new leaders of Protestant Christianity made more than a few changes.  The one that is important here is the condemnation of Christmas.  The Protestant Church had no problem pointing out that Christmas was a Heathen holiday.  Protestant adherents were forbidden for many years to celebrate Christmas for this very reason.  The Roman Catholic Church never denied what they appropriated, even to this day, despite the biblical warning to not adopt Heathen customs (Deuteronomy 12:29 – 32).    page 11

The sun God Mithra, a Persian import, had many followers in the Roman Army.  Mithra’s followers believed that the god had incarnated as a man from a heavenly realm, was born of a virgin on December 25 for the purpose of human salvation.  Egyptians who lived in Rome at that time celebrated the birth of Horus, a God said to be of virgin birth by the Goddess Isis.  Depictions of Horus in the Egyptian temples were that of a babe in a crib with his virginal mother, Isis looking on.  At the other end of town were the gladiators, many of them Germanic prisoners of war.  The Germanics celebrated Yule, the turning of the wheel and the rebirth of the God (Balder) as a babe from the Goddess (they also noted with great respect that the days became longer - the return of the Sun, reborn in the sky and life).  page 27  

In the basic context of the Klaus myth, it’s pretty much the stuff of Indo-European myth and legend.  The God Thor flew across the sky in his wagon powered and pulled by two magical goats.  Woden (Wotan/Odin), the primary Germanic/Norse God, rode on his magical horse and was accompanied by his minions during what was known as the 'Wild Hunt.'  This 'Hunt' happened during the winter solstice/Yule period.  And, Woden was also known to grant wishes to those who deserved them.  page 65

Christmas is not Yule, and Yule is not Christmas.  Even though they are celebrated at the same time of the year, Yule is the much older of the two celebrations.  Historical data explains how the ancient Heathen Yule was appropriated by Christianity to help bring about its own ends - the conversion of the Northern European peoples to Christianity.   Our Heilige Yule - A Reclamation Project serves not only as a handbook for reclamation but also as a guide for celebration.

Powers turned up nothing.  Not a torn piece of fabric, wallet or purse.  Nothing – Debra Collins vanished.  Nancy Collins called him every day, expecting some news.  Powers was frustrated and tired of lying. 

          Edward ‘Slick’ Powers was accustomed to winning; solve the case and move on to the next one.  Ever since he first bumped up against Nick Hammer and Magda Gomez his cop life greatly improved.  That and he’d like to take Magda to bed.  A fantasy he believed, but one he enjoyed.  But the Collins case was desert in need of an oasis and talking to Nancy Collins every blessed day wore his ass out.  Slick decided to call it a day but stopped by Jimmy Boyd’s office on the way out. 

          “You headed out Slick?” Boyd asked. 

          “Yeah boss … my brain is fried.  The Collins case … and Nancy Collins calling everyday for an update.  I can’t keep puttin’ her off and lying to her Jimmy.” 

          “So today is like yesterday and the day before, right?” 

          “Yes sir, zero.  You saw my case file.  She’s liked by everyone I talked to.  Debra and her parents have no enemies.  Employers all say the family is good, solid people.  I’m all outta leads Jimmy … nothing.  You have any ideas?” 

          “You’re not gonna like it.” 

          “Let me have it boss.” 

          “I think she was taken, Slick.” 

 “You mean like what, sex trafficking?” 

          “No … I don’t think so … she’s not the type.  I’m thinkin’ like mistaken identity … someone pegged her for somethin’ or somethin’ else … and at the wrong place at the wrong time.  I think she’s gone.” 

          “Gone … like in dead gone?” 

          “Yeah … afraid so Eddie.”
